ECOLOGY
Poster Text: The study of the natural world of plants, animals, soils, air, water, and how they interact to form living systems is called ecology. Because we humans have unprecedented power to change our surroundings, we must understand how those changes will affect the environment for both the short and long term. We may not fully appreciate the impact the environemt has on our existence, but we can not afford to ignore it.
Many opportunities are open to people who study ecology and the environment. Wildlife research biologists gather important data for the understand of management and preservation of native animal populations. Landfill managers make sure that we recycle and dispose of waste in a way that will have a minimum effect on living systems. Environmental lawyers work to establish and enforce laws which protect our land and waters.

Ecology, a multidisciplinary science that transcends and includes biology, is the study of relationships between living organisms and their environment - "where organisms are found, how many occur there, and why" (C. J. Krebs- Ecology). The word ecology is based on the Greek word oikos for household and means the "study of the household", in this case, nature. It was coined for biology studies by German scientist Ernst Haeckel.
Ecologists gather information on the "household" Earth, from the micro to macro levels through the disciplines of biochemistry, molecular biology, and cellular biology, as well as the sciences of anthropology, botany, zoology, geology, and the study of local ecosystems to the global biosphere as the environment of the human species and all known life forms in the Universe..
Environmental concerns include the preservation, restoration and sustainability of the natural systems through the conservation and recycling (highest efficiency use of finite resources), and prevention of introducing harmful and unnatural substances (pollution).
Educational posters include maps and charts of Pollution & the Environment, Global Threats to the Environment, biomes, rainforest, and environmentalists Rachel Carson, Jacques-Yves Cousteau, Ernst Haeckel, John Muir, Henry David Thoreau and Ellen Richards.

Life Underfoot Poster Set - There is an intricate web of life that exists beneath our footsteps. In this beautifully rendered poster series, a renowned American Museum of Natural History illustrator dissects a segment of the earth to reveal how every cubic foot is an ecosystem unto itself. Brilliant and accurate representations in vivid colors show spectacular views of the Forest Woodland, Desert, Tropical Rainforest, Tidal Pool, Alpine Tundra, and Prairie Grasslands. Each poster features an overview of the ecosystem shown as it appears underfoot, accompanied by a diagram highlighting and defining the different organisms and elements shown. Laminated. Size of each: 22"L x 34"W. |

On March 24, 1989, the Exxon tanker Valdez spilled oil in the Prince William Sound, Alaska. The event is considered one of the most devastating man-made environmental disasters ever to occur at sea due to the Prince William Sound's remote location, accessible only by helicopter and boat. The spill was 10.8 million U.S. gallons which eventually covereed 11,000 sq. miles of ocean and habitat of salmon, sea otters, seals and seabirds. In addition cleanup crews suffered health damage due to exposure to oil and cleanup chemicals.
