Chemistry and physics are two of the most fundamental scientific studies of the natural world. Chemistry deals with the atomic level of matter, physics is the study of the physical universe which makes up matter.
The basis of today's chemistry is in the ancient art of alchemy whose experiments and observations lead to more sophisticated techniques and equipment. Modern chemistry and physics follow the scientific method of acquiring both theoretical and practical knowledge by observing a phenomenon in the physical world, forming an explanation or hypothesis for the phenomenon, and testing the hypothesis by means of objective, reproducible experiment.

The Science of Matter
Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space. Depending on the temperature, pressure, and other factors, matter can exist in different "phases" of states, the most familiar of which are solid, liquid, and gas. Matter can change states depending on its environemnt. At its boiling point, a liquid changes into a gas, and at its freezing point it will become a solid.

Alchemy, the basis of modern chemistry, mostly remembered as an attempt of transform lead (Pb) into gold (Au).
Carl Gustav Jung, Swiss psychiatrist, studied the roots of alchemy and connected the alchemical processes as a spiritual art having as its aim the psychological transformation of the alchemist himself.

Agent Orange was the code name for a herbicide and defoliant used during the Vietnam War from 1961-1971 by the U.S. military. Agent Orange released dioxins which cause health problems.
DDT (Dichloro - Diphenyl - Trichloroethane) is a synthetic pesticide used in WWII to control mosquitoes that spread insect born diseases like malaria and typhus. After WWII it was used as an agricultural insecticide. In 1962 Rachel Carson's book Silent Spring exposed the environmental impact of using DDT without understanding the full effect on ecology and human health. |
