Astronomy is the scientific study of celestial objects and phenomena that originate outside Earth's atmosphere. Astronomy, one of the oldest sciences, is is concerned with the formation and evolution of the universe. The word astronomy is from the Greek astron (star) + nomos (law), or the law of the stars.

Archeological evidence shows ancient civilizations such as Babylon and the Maya measured time based on the periodical appearance and disappearance of celestial objects. Stonehenge is perhaps the most noted ancient observatory. Astrology, which shares a common root with astronomy, is the belief that the position of objects in the sky can provide understanding about events in human life.

A star is a massive body of plasma in outer space which is currently, or has in the past, produced energy through nuclear fusion and emits light because of its intense heat. All stars, except the Sun, appear as twinkling lights from Earth because of the atmosphere.

Urania, the Greek Muse of astronomy and astrology, is part of a sisterhood of nine goddesses who inspire the creative process.
