The interconnected body of salt water that covers the planet Earth is called the World Ocean and is currently divided into the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern and Arctic (ranked here largest to smallest) by the continents and archipelagos. Seas, bays, gulfs, straits, etc. are names for smaller areas of oceans. Sea may also refers to landlocked bodies of water. The word ocean is from the Greek okeanos for river based on their observance of currents. Ancient oceans include Panthalassa, Tethys and Iapetus. <more land form posters>
