Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., a physician and Professor of Anatomy & Physiology, who published in 1843 The Contagiousness of Puerperal Fever which argued that puerperal fever, a deadly disease of women giving birth, was frequently carried from patient to patient by physicians and nurses. He was also the author of the poem "Old Ironsides" which saved the 18th century wooden Navy frigate USS Constitution from being scraped.
