Theoretical and practical knowledge about the world is acquired by the scientific method of

  • observing a phenomenon in the physical world,
  • forming an explanation, or hypothesis, for the phenomenon, and
  • testing the hypothesis by means of objective, reproducible experiment.

This scientific method, proposed by Sir Francis Bacon, was considered 'revolutionary' and represents a marker date of changing attitudes and thinking about the world that was discernable from the time of Copernicus, Kepler and Vesalius.

The exact boundaries of scientific disciplines are impossible and undesireable to establish because knowledge acquired in the study of one subject is informative and applicable in other areas. Application of scientific knowledge, which by nature is incomplete, resulted in technologies that alter the basic nature they sought to manipulate. To assume that new technologies designed to remedy old technologies will be better informed is, ummm, unscientific?

Life sciences - biology, botany, and zoology: Physical sciences - astronomy, chemistry, and physics: Earth sciences - environmental, energy, geology, and weather & climate, classrooms.

How Safe Is Our Food?
Where "Bad Bugs" Grow
You can't see bacteria and viruses, but the average kitchen has many palces where they can grow.
1 Refrigerator - Keep it at 40ºF or cooler to slow the growth of bacteria. Keep the freezer at 0º.
2 Dishcloths and sponges - A sponge or dishcloth used to wipe off raw meat drippings can house millions of bacteria after just a few hours. Use paper towels or change sponges and dishcloths often.
3 Raw eggs may contain salmonella bacteris. Don't eat anything that contains raw eggs, including uncooked cookie dough or cake batter.
4 Countertops - Germs grow on places where food has spilled. Clean your counters with hot water and detergent.
5 Cutting boards and knives - Bacteria from raw meat, poultry or fish stay and grow until board or knives are thoroughly washed in hot water.
6 Cook meats and poultry until no read shows. Cook red meat to an interior temperature of 160ºF, poultry to 180º.
7 Dishes - When you wash dishes and utensils by hand, allow them to air dry to prevent re-contamination from hands and towels.
8 Leftovers - Refrigerate food as soon as possible, and no longer than two hours after cooking. Remember: When in doubt, throw it out.
9 Fruits and vegetables - Always wash produce before eating to remove any disease-causing bugs and traces of pesticides and other chemicals.
