Desiderata, Latin for “Things desired as essential”, is a prose poem first copyrighted in 1927 by Max Ehrmann. It has erroneously been attributed to being found in Saint Paul's Church, Baltimore, Maryland in the year 1692. In 1971 Desiderata was recorded by Les Crane.

Lucretia Mott (née Coffin) was educated at a Quaker boarding school and eventually became a teacher. She was drawn to activism when she discovered the male teachers were paid twice as much as the women teachers. She was also an abolitionist and one of the founders of Swarthmore College in 1864.
