Gregorio Allegri
b. 1582; Italy
d. 2-7-1652
Italian composer Gregorio Allegri's a cappella religious music Miserere is one of the most often-recorded examples of late Renaissance music, however from the time of its composure the Vatican forbade copies of the Miserere in order to create an air of mystery around the music. Then, in 1770, a 14 year old Mozart was able to transcribed it faithfully from memory after hearing the music only twice (the first "bootleg" copy?).
