The word 'female' referes to the part of the species that produces the ova or egg cells, for the species reproductive process. The symbol for female gender is a circle above a cross, the same symbol for the planet Venus.
The word "woman" evolved from the Proto-Indo European root "man", meaning "hand", our distinctive extremity capability to manipulate objects. In Old English the word "wfyman" was used to describe a female human, and is perhaps a root to the word wife, the female role in a marriage.
