The Dalai Lama is a successive title of Tibetan Buddhism that goes back to 1391. The Dalai Lama is considered the present incarnation of the bodhisattva of compassion, Avalokitesvara. "Dalai" means "ocean" (Mongolian) and "Lama" is the Tibetan translation of the Sanskrit word "guru" or teacher, referring to the lama's extensive wisdom. The current and 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, was born July 6, 1935. In 1959 China invaded Tibet, forcing the Dalai Lama to Dharamsala in Northern India. The Dalai Lama was awared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. (also link to other supporters of Montessori education).
“The purpose of religion is not to build beautiful churches or temples, but to cultivate positive human qualities such as tolerance, generosity and love.” -The Dalai Lama
