James Hubert Blake, a composer, lyricist, and pianist of ragtime, jazz, and popular music, was a long time collaborator with Noble Sissle. Together they wrote Shuffle Along in 1921, one of the first Broadway musical to be written and directed by African Americans. Future star Josephine Baker was a member of the chorus line the show.

Among Blake's compositions were the hits "Bandana Days", "Charleston Rag", "Love Will Find A Way", "Memories of You", and "I'm Just Wild About Harry".
