 Tennessee, nicknamed the "Volunteer State" because of the number of Tennesseans in the War of 1812, joined the Union on June 1, 1796 as the 16th state.
Tennessee borders eight other states: Kentucky and Virginia are on the north, to the east is North Carolina, on the south are Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi, the Mississippi River with Arkansas and Missouri is on the west.

Tennessee has two floral symbols.
The state flower, the Iris, is a perennial herb with showy flowers in a wide range of colors. Iris is the Greek word for rainbow; the French fleur-de-lis is a stylized iris.
The Passion Flower is the state wild flower. It is also commonly known as the maypop, the wild apricot and the ocoee for Tennessee's Ocoee River. The 'passion' in Passion Flower refers to the structure of the blossom that resembles symbols of the Crucifixion of Jesus — the three crosses, the crown of thorns, nails and cords.
