Florida Facts

Florida FlagFlorida, known as the "Sunshine State", joined the Union on March 3, 1845 as the 27th state. Florida is in the South Atlantic Region (US Census Bureau).

Florida gained its name from Juan Ponce de Leon, who called the land "La Florida", for "flowery" describing the lush vegetation, or for the date he landed, sometime around April 2, 1513 which was Pascua Florida - Flowery Passover.

The Seminoles, a heterogeneous tribe formed c 1750 of mostly Lower Creeks and other tribes, escaped African-American slaves, and white Europeans, moved into the Florida area decimated of its original indigenous population by disease and violence brought by the Spanish. Beginning in 1817 the U.S. government fought two wars with the Seminoles: future president Andrew Jackson noted for his participation in the first Seminole War; the most remembered Seminole leader was the war chief Osceola (1804-1838).

Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de León was on the second voyage of Christopher Columbus and became the first Governor of Puerto Rico by appointment of the Spanish Crown. He is notable in Florida history as the first known European exploration (1513) and calling the land "La Florida" and the legend of the Fountain of Youth.

In 1586, the English privateer Sir Frances Drake, attacked and burned St. Augustine.
