Maine, known as the Pine Tree State, is the most sparsely populated state east of the Mississippi. Maine was broken off from the state of Massachuetts to become the 23rd state, along with Missouri, on March 15, 1820 (remember the Missouri Compromise?).
Maine is the northernmost and easternmost state; the Atlantic Ocean is to the southeast, New Hampshire is to the west, the Canadian provinces of Quebec and New Brunswick are to the northwest and northeast respectively.
