Rivers are narrow bodies of fresh water that follow a path and erode away the land they flow over creating land forms such as deltas, canyons and valleys. Rivers were the first great pathways of humanity and we can study civilizations by exploring waterways today.

Together the Tigres and Euphrates Rivers formed the natural borders for a region that was a "cradle" for Sumer, Babylonia, and Assyria civilizations. The Greeks called the area Mesopotamia, literally "between the rivers".
The Tigres and Euphrates Rivers are part of the "Fertile Crescent", an historic Middle East region that corresponds to present-day Egypt, Israel, West Bank, Gaza strip, and Lebanon and parts of Jordan, Syria, Iraq, southeastern Turkey and southwestern Iran.

Niger River, the 3rd longest river in Africa (2600 miles or 4180 km), is the principal river of western Africa. The Niger extends through Guinea, Mali, Niger, is part of the border with Benin, then through Nigeria, and discharges through the massive Niger Delta into the Gulf of Guinea (Atlantic Ocean).
FYI - the Niger Delta area was also known as the Oil Rivers because of the cultivation of oil palm tree, the source of an edible oil that was also an important component in personal care products (Palmolive soap) and industrial lubricant in the Industrial Revolution. Today the Niger River Delta is the site of 75% of Nigeria's petroleum production, Africa's largest producer.

The River Thames, which has supported human activity for milleninia, rises in the west-central Cotswold Hills and flows through southern England emptying to the North Sea at the Thames Estuary, the world's second largest tidal movement.
Because the Thames is a tidal river, London is under the threat of severe flooding when the conditions of weather and high tide push water up the Thames from the sea. On December 7, 1663 Samuel Pepys wrote in his diary, 'There was last night the greatest tide that was ever was remembered in England to have been in this River, all Whitehall having been drowned.'
The Thames Tunnel, engineered by Marc Brunel, was the world's first underwater tunnel.
