By looking at how horses have been depicted in art we can learn about the unique relationship between humans and horses. Horses were domesticated from wild horses by at least 2000 BC, as evidenced by elaborate burials in the southern Urals (Russia) showing chariots with horses arranged to imitate running. Horses have helped do the work of herding, plowing and hauling, used by military, and been a part of competition (jousting and racing), for the pleasure of man.

Centaurs, from Greek mythology, are depicted as a human torso connected to a horse's body. Centaurs represent humanity caught in animal passions, usually experienced as wild and unpredictable.

The Lascaux cave paintings, dating between 15,000 and 13,000 BC include 364 images of horses among the 2,000 figures. The Lascaux caves, discovered in 1940, became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.

Lascaux is in the Dordogne River region of southwestern France.
