A "letter" is an element or symbol of a writing system, such as an alphabet, that represents the vowel (a, e, i, o, u) and consonant sounds in a spoken language. The word alphabet evolved from alpha and beta, the first two letters in the Greek alphabet. Most alphabets in use today are linear (made up of lines); exceptions are Braille for the blind, manual alphabets where fingers and/or hand positions represent letters as in sign languages for communications with the deaf; Morse code as a digital modulation, and cuneiform beginning as a system of pictures (pictographs) that simplified and abstracted over time. The English language uses the Latin alphabet consisting of 26 letters, the Cyrillic alphabet is used in Slavic languages like Russian; Arabic and Hebrew scripts are examples of abjads with symbols for consonants and most vowels unexpressed.
A number symbol, or numeral, is used to describe a mathematical concept of quantity and order. Numbers are used to describe a count, measurements, labels, and codes. In arithmetic operations numbers are added, subtracted, multiplied and divided.

There are 85/6 characters in the Cherokee Alphabet devised by the Cherokee silversmith Sequoyah (c 1775-1843) who saw the advantages of the white peoples "talking leaves" and wanted the Cherokee to have the same ability to communicate. While some symbols in the Cherokee Alphabet resemble Latin alphabet letters the sounds are much different; the characters represent syllables. Sequoyah's writing system was made official by the Cherokee Nation in 1825.
