Altha Blount and William Brown

Narrative from the Black Family Book, ca 1975

Altha, b. the third daughter of Cyrena and Amasa Blount, married William Brown. William’s father had come from London, England, to Kansas and settled on a tree claim. William was a brick layer and built their home in Macksville where their six sons were born.

In 1892 they moved to Oklahoma Territory to settle on a claim near Seiling. At that time it was a vast prairie, inhabited by Indians and one other white family by the name of Gates. Mrs. Gates was overjoyed to have another white family as neighbors. Her daughter Fanny was a sister to Dwight Gates who married Maude Blount (Rae note- I assume Dwight was also her son? or is this a typo and should it be sister-in-law?)

Brown’s first house on this new claim was a dugout, later they built a frame house which was been enlarged and is still in existence. Their son Oscar lived there until his death in 1971. All are gone from this area now but their posterity lives on in Dewey County. There are grandchildren and great-grandchildren living in Wyoming, Colorado, Oregon, California and one in the east.
