Shakespeare's The Tradegy of Julius Caesar, written in 1599, is based on Roman history and played off the situation of England where another strong ruler, the childless and elderly Queen Elizabeth I, had not named a successor. Famous line from the play are "Et tu, Brute?" ("i.e. "You too, Brutus?"), and "Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears...". The month of July is named for Julius Caesar. |
